Marine Life Sanctuaries Society and Underwater Counsel of BC
Ocean Quest works closely with both the MLSS and UCBC on a variety of projects. Most recently, Ocean Quest has been on the Bioherm Sponge Reef Project assisting with various studies, research and awareness programs. Bioherm Sponge Reefs were once the largest reef systems to ever exist in Earths history and were thought to be extinct 60 - 100 million years ago. Within the past 20 years, a series of Bioherm Sponge Reefs were discovered in Howe Sound by local diver, explorer and conservationist Glen Dennison. Some of the these reefs are shallow enough to be accessed by experienced scuba divers. Ocean Quest was asked to prepare a PADI Distinctive Specialty course which would teach divers the uniqueness of the Sponge Bioherm Reefs as well teach the skills needed to to safely dive on them with causing any damage.
